BMAA Success Story: Ashley Turner lands marketing job with Footlocker

Ashley Turner

Ashley Turner is a proud member of BMAA, and we had the chance to catch-up with Ashley and ask her some questions about how BMAA helped her land her job at Footlocker as Community Marketing Manager in Houston. We congratulate Ashley on her new position and wish her best of luck!

  •       What role/company did you apply for?

Houston Community Marketing Manager with Foot Locker Inc.

  •       How did you hear about the role? Did you apply for this role through the BMAA Job Board?

I met a Foot Locker recruiter on BMAA LinkedIn Group page in 2020, upon meeting her I initially applied and interviewed for a different role with the company and didn't land it. Which was ok, because I'm a strong believer in "what's meant for me, will never pass me," So I continued to keep in contact with the recruiter, and monitored Foot Locker’s job postings and about a year later the Houston Marketing Manager role became available in my hometown and I just knew it was game time! My mindset was "sometimes it's not about winning the game, it's about winning the championship." Furthermore, I applied for the role, reached out to the recruiter, and the rest was history.

  •       What about the company, hiring manager, and team convinced you to accept the role?

Well one thing most people don't know is, I've always wanted to work for Foot Locker since the age of 16. I love the experience they create for shoppers and as I got older, I continued to pay close attention to their marketing strategies and trends as a 'business to consumer' corporation. What ideally sealed the deal in this instance, was the community approach the company started in the past 2-3 years. They're more than just a retail - shoe and apparel business but a business that invests in the community and culture. I felt every past role I’ve held prepared me for this moment.

Prior to accepting my role, I made a checklist of all the things I wanted in my next position with a company, I would accept including benefits, company culture and role responsibilities, and as I interviewed and spoke with others that worked for the Foot Locker, I knew this was a perfect fit. Additionally, I'm the first Foot Locker Marketing Manager for Houston, this opportunity allows me to set the tone of the role which is a great honor, but with that comes great responsibility as well. But believe me when I say, they couldn't have chosen anyone more perfect.

  •       What are your top 3 favorite benefits the company offers?

Some of the top things I love about Foot Locker are that the company has implemented a “Live Well. Work Well” wellness program that encourages team members to take time during the week to balance work and self-care. For me, it’s a dedicated hour to go to the gym, do yoga, take a break … or whatever I want to consider my “me time.”

Another benefit I enjoy is that the company offers Summer Fridays. These are half day Fridays we're able to take during the summer. And Lastly, Foot Locker also offers discounts, events, and other perks that I look forward to utilizing.

  •       What are your favorite and (if applicable) not so favorite aspects about your hiring experience?

My favorite aspect of the hiring process was how welcomed the organization made me feel. They even sent a little snack box to get me through the first week of onboarding. Additionally, they made sure to set up various meet and greets with me and colleagues I will work with. When I say I love it here, I love it here! For the first I feel like I'm at home with a company.

  •       What are your career aspirations? How will this role help you achieve those aspirations?

My career aspiration is to one day become the Chief Marketing Officer or VP of Marketing of a company. This role will help me achieve those aspirations because it's allowing me to create opportunities for different people on so many levels. I love that I'm able to utilize my marketing skills through various avenues and notable brands while being challenged to constantly learn new things that continue to drive my career forward.
